A MRSL is an innovative new approach to manage chemicals in products and supply chains.
The MRSL differs from a RSL because it restricts hazardous substances potentially used and discharged into the environment during manufacturing, not just those substances that could be present in finished products. The MRSL takes into consideration both process and functional chemicals used to make products, as well as chemicals used to clean equipment and facilities. It addresses ANY chemical used within the four walls of a manufacturing facility.
The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals ZDHC group developed and published a MRSL with input from key stakeholders from the ZDHC member brands and chemical companies. This initiative demonstrates leadership and innovation and cuts across cultural and competitive boundaries.
Any time new tools or processes are implemented into manufacturing facilities, it is easier if there is one version rather than several. In many cases brands use the same manufacturers, and the fact that ZDHC decided to align on and develop a single MRSL demonstrates empathy and true leadership. It benefits the brands, the manufacturers and of course the chemical companies because they only have to adhere to a single MRSL that contains the same chemical restrictions, limits and test methods. Any opportunity to simplify the apparel and footwear supply chain should be celebrated!
A MRSL changes the way we look at chemicals management. It focuses at the beginning of the manufacturing cycle by prohibiting chemicals entering the facility and thus reduces the need to treat and clean up effluent.
What are the impacts to your business?
Questions to consider:
- Do you have the necessary expertise to implement a MRSL?
- Do you currently have relationships with chemical suppliers that have the resources to demonstrate the quality of their chemicals?
- Will you need both a RSL and a MRSL in order to thrive in this new environment?
